: I have a '47 Farmall M, with the narrow front. The tractor is in excellent original shape, except for the front end.In 5th gear on the hardroad the front end occasionally vibrates violently from side to side. After investigating the steering sector gears which are fine,I think the trouble is the top bushing is either EXTREMELY worn or missing completly. The play is in the shaft going down to the front axle. Turn it one way the shaft moves north a 1/2 inch. Turn it the other way, it moves south a 1/2 inch.Does anyone know how to replace the bushings? Also I discovered that you can turn the steering wheel& front end 360 degrees . Is this normal? If your getting movement of 1/2" each way you probably have worse problems than just a bushing. The shaft and housing may also be worn in which case you will need either replacements or a good machine shop (or the super size tube of JB weld). Good luck.
