I'm working a temp job right now because that's the only place I can get hired. I got laid off in 2008, and while I was out of work I turned 55...I guess 55 ids the magic number where employers no longer want you. In one interview I had, the person doing the hiring wondered out loud if hiring someone my age would "skew" the company's insurance rates higher [I checked; since it's about insurance rates and not "strictly" age related, no age discrimination occurred]. I ran out of unemployment in 2009, and since then it's been working 3 months here, three months there, as a temp during "busy season."
The other thing is, now that I'm about to turn 58, I honestly am NOT as physically able as I was at 20; consequently, there are jobs that I would've done years ago that I simply can't do anymore, in a physical sense. But that's not much of a problem, as most employers don't want to run the risk of some geezer keeling over on their production line anyway, while there's an ample supply of 20-somethings out there.
SO I haven't showed up in any "unemployment" statistics since 2009...even though I haven't worked much since then, either. Right now, I'm selling insurance over the phone to Medicare eligible people...not on a full commission basis, like a regular agent, but for an hourly pay plus a $5 commission for every enrollment I get [not the hundreds that "regular" agents make per enrollment, even though I'm now licensed in all 50 states plus DC].
And after December 7th, when the Annual Enrollment Period ends, I'll be out looking for work again.
