Hope he recovers well. People always think accidents happen because you're careless, but parts do wear out too. Usually when you are not expecting them to.
Two years ago a tire from a slingshot dragster (true 60s style), just missed my head. I could feel the wind and the heat of the tire as it went passed. As the car entered the burnout box I had walked forward to spot the starting lights for him. As he exited the box he was going 20mph, and tires around 100mph, tire was fatigued and separated from the rim for some reason.
