"tries to die like it is running out of gas" I think you answered your own question- check you fuel system, take the fuel line off at the carb and verify you have good flow there, work backwards until you find out what's plugged. I would guess rust and sediment is plugging the screen in the sediment bowl or even obstructing the fitting on the bottom of the tank that feed the sediment bowl. The folks over on the 8N board have a good 50 step trouble shooting guide, down load and read it's good and contains a lot of wisdom
