I prefer chain drive for motorcycles and ATVs. The newer O-ring sealed chains have lube sealed in the inner pin of the chain and do not wear like the older chains. I typically get between 20K to 30K miles on my motorcycle chains and yes that includes dirty conditions.
A big advantage for me is that I can go up or down a tooth on the front sprocket to change the gearing for my needs - can't do that with gear drive. Several years back during a trip to Prudue Bay I towed my buddies gear drive bike to the repair shop with my chain drive model. I have have both but chain drive is my first choice.
Note - motorcycle chain is different than implement chain, do not use implement chain on a motorcylce or ATV.
