I had an old Ford starter that I thought I rebuilt several times. Finally it would short to the frame requiring a hit with a hammer to cause the armature to BOUNCE enough to get it spinning. Seems that the problem was the armature shaft that rides in the bronze bushing was reduced in diameter allowing it to strike the case.
New starter solved the problem and I didn't have to split the tractor and redo the ring gear like I originally thought I'd have to do.
Starter was new and I bought it for about $150. Money well spent. I think I went on line looking for it. Don't remember where I got it nor where it was made. It works great whatever.
