The 9N at introduction sold for 595 US dollars while the Farmall M which Ford identified as the most likely competitor priced out on average for 1050 depending on the package and what was deleted. At 1050 normally got an owner full electrical, hydraulics, both belt and PTO among other features. Coming out of the Great Depression many gave serious thought to the price difference. After WWII many people had good incomes and wanted a tractor to tend garden, clear snow, and keep a small acreage mowed which gave birth to the utility tractor business which the 8N helped satisfy the market. It should not be said the 8N was not sold to farm businesses but the other market was very sizable for Ford.
