You are correct. We found this out at my work two years ago when the weather was sub-zero. Our office/lobby portion of the building was not heated over the weekend... fortunate that there is no plumbing in the area that this small furnace heats, or we would have had a major mess/expense.
So I would only go with a thermostat that is hardwired to electricity - but has a battery for backup. Battery ONLY is a bad deal, especially in cold climates.
