You discovered the real world of warranties! It would be nice if the Federal Goverment would step in, & say a warranty is a warranty. If You have one its fully covered; but it probably wont happen.
Sears: I really like Sears because they sell a lot of US made Tools; but the warranties on power equipment are worriesom at best. But the Briggs & Stratton generators on their website are typically rated 5 star by customers which says something about the quality. They show many other brands on their website including DeWalt which are very high dollar ($1000/4500watt) but I'd bet my life its built like a tank.
Lowes I have little knowledge of but if You buy a generator that is for example double what You need; then it is going to last longer because it wont work as hard. BY THE WAY... Sears will pricematch if You prove a better price on the internet with something they can get!!! I bought a $560 Bench vise for $375 Made in USA by Sears price matching about 2 years ago! Wish You luck in what ever You decide!
