If the connections are pipe threads then the best stuff to use is the teflon in a tube, without the chunks used for normal pipe systems. IF that does not work then you can try teflon tape, but it's use on hydraulic systems is usually frowned upon. It's frowned upon because if not done properly pieces of the tape will end up inside the system and cause problems. IF you use it, make sure you wrap the threads in teh right direction and insure that the tape stays at least a few threads back from the end of the fitting so there is no chance of it getting pushed into the system as the fitting is tightened.
That said if the fittings are straight thread and have o-ring seals, like many valve manifolds are, then all you need to do is get new o-rings for the proper size SAE O-ring fitting size and reseal them.
