Back in the mid 60's I worked in an auto parts store. A man came in that had just bought a new starter drive and spun it out like that. He wanted to know what to do. I was 18 and had not worked on Fords very much so I could not help him. A customer who was standing nearby said to hold it vertical with the gear end up and you could release it with pencil. Then he demonstrated how to do it. He poked the sharpened pencil up inside where the lock out/in mechanism is located and it fell back into place. He did this a couple of times so we all could learn the technique. I have not seen this problem since.
