Did you let them try to dig a hole? That's always a hoot, the first time or two.
I've got two boys, one's a writer and the other an engineer- the classic "right brain"(creative) vs. "left brain"(logical). Put 'em each on the backhoe for a few minutes- the engineer picked it up pretty quickly, and was soon doing a credible job. The writer never could get the hang of it, finally gave up.
