Pete, y'all must be a city boy. Sweet corn is used for human consumption as in canned or frozen corn. The corn that most of us raise is what you city folks call 'cow' corn. It's the stuff you normally see growing all over. But when the crop is poor, it's not the end of the world, but short crops put pressure on the market price for it. It's used to make corn oil products (margarine, corn oil for cooking, etc.), plastics, ethanol, is ground for corn meal to make Fritos and other such snacks, and above all, livestock feed. Because of the tonnage or bushelage, it is the cheapest feed going in most cases. And we export a lot of it, which brings money INTO this country. It probably generates close to half the farm economy of the country overall along with wheat and soybeans. When yields go down, there's a lot of bankers start getting jittery. But no one has starved in this country yet because of a droughty crop. Don't worry.
