Was the blacktop just a skin coat? A big disk that's folded up puts a lot of weight on the main frame if it's dropped, but even then it wouldn't tear up a good heavy blacktopped road. The scratches would be fairly deep and it would make a whole lot of noise but it wouldn't just disk it up into chunks.
A few years ago I was watching a neighboring farmer come down the road with a 21' disk with the left wing down. When he went by my place he barely missed my mailbox but he didn't miss the bridge that comes after the mailbox. He was the type of guy who just aims for the middle of bridges and doesn't slow down so it took him awhile to come to a stop after the wing hit the railing. Somehow the wing went over the top of the railing and nothing was hurt. That wouldn't have been my kind of luck if it would have happened to me. Jim
