Here in South Dakota it is illegal to sell 85 octane. That said, western part of the state has always sold it because of a higher altitude so you could get by with it so they say. A couple of weeks ago there was an article in the paper that one distributor had been selling it in the eastern part of the state where it is not allowed. A check showed 29 stations selling it that weren't supposed to be. They even left the labels on the pump that said it was 87 octane. Some places were even selling 83. The distributor in question said everyone else was doing it so thats why he was. Gas suppliers in Wyoming told the governor that if he didn't allow it in the state, they would stop shipping to the state. Gov thinks it would be ok because we can't go without gas. Point is, you never know what the heck your putting in your tank and why your mileage drops all of a sudden.
