I work in a major transmission facility here in Idaho, and the guy that managed our shop for 20+ years always maintained that both type F and dextron were interchangable with each other. The type F would give a firmer shift, whether used in a ford or gm, and the dextron would do the opposite - smoother, softer shifts. Of course, that applies to the older stuff. Anything newer than the mid 90's or so require new additive packages, mostly leaning toward dextron. The Mercon fluid would probably be the closest equivalent to the old type F.
