We have an elderly lady here that collects hair from the local barber every spring to spread out in her garden bed. She says the smell of �human� will keep them out. Seems to work. They got in an uprotected area and cleaned out half a dozen pepper plants. She spread out a batch of hair and replanted. No problems.
Personally, I keep a feeder close by so they have no reason to go in the garden.
