You just measure the distance needed for your row spacing and then count the seeds/plants in the measured distance.
Here are the distances for different row spacing: 40 inch row 13 ft. 1 in. 38 inch row 13 ft. 9 in. 36 inch row 14 ft. 6 in. 30 inch row 17 ft. 5 in. 22 inch row 23 ft. 8 in. 20 inch row 26 ft. 2 in. 15 inch row 34 ft. 10 in.
So measure this distance and multiply by 1000 and you have the population. I use this when setting my planter and to check actual stands several time during the growing season. I have found a big difference in some varieties in final stands. It is just a tool to use when picking your seed corn.
