I vaguely remember having a crank phone when we lived on the farm. This would have been around 1961 and I was four years old. When we moved to town, the phones had rotary dials but the switching equipment wasn't installed, so the operator would come on the line when you picked up the receiver. Sometime in the early sixties we finally got dial phones, but you still had to go through the operator to make a long-distance call. Local calls only used four digits; when we finally got direct long-distance dialing in the seventies we had to use five digits for local calls. I think the five-digit dialing continued into the nineties. This was in eastern Colorado.
