When I was a kid, we already had dial service- Our number was Jarrettsville 3131. That got changed in the late 50's to "OWen2-3131", and later to 692-3131, then they added the area code of 301, and later changed that. My Grandfather's phone in town, population about 5,000, still had operators until the early 60's, and his number was Belair 13. When they went to dial service, his new number was 838-1350. It's gotten to a point now, I don't even know the numbers to the exchanges in this county, and I just retired from the phone company 10 years ago after working in this county for over thirty years!
