I think we actually got a dial phone here in the late 1940's.
However, I think our local phone company was the last in the entire nation to go from simply a four digit number to a three digit prefix and then the four digit number.
After I got out of the Marine Corps in 1963, I found an old buddy of mine had retired from the Corps and was working on a project of updating switchboards in the Pentagon. He worked mostly at night so as to cause minimal disruption during the day, and once in a while he would have an operator he knew plug him in to our home phone and we'd BS for an hour without either of us having to pay for it.
He said it drove the operators nuts when he'd give just a four digit phone number for Seward, Nebraska.
