Back in the day, My divorced sister had an old 55 Plymouth that was ailing. She was raising 3 boys on her own. I told her I'd look at it...she went in the house and spent some time with the wife. I started it (jumpers) and checked and the alternator wasn't putting out anything. I went out to the local parts house and got a rebuilt one and put it on. Went in the house and told her the cable was loose. She must have found out I put the alternator on and never came back for quite a few years. Best to tell them!
PS The way to tell if an alternator is putting out current is to put a steel pocket knife blade on the middle of the back where the bearing is and if it is putting out, it will be attracted like a magnet. ohfred
