It just was not responding smoothly and shifting into gears like it should. We've had two 4840's for years and he could just tell something was wrong.
I agree 100%, JD - that was the first thing I told Dad, too - find another mechanic!
For one thing, just looking at it, there was no obvious gear damage or bearing pieces laying anywhere... There was no appreciable amount of clutch lining or pieces, etc...
We've got 5 JD dealerships around the farm, but all about 50 miles away.
Dad suspects the hired man (who is in his 70's) might have put some water-contaminated oil into it, but is not sure how long it has been in there - and is not positive that is the whole story, either.
But Dad is also getting pretty gunshy about taking it to ANY dealership. His 1st dealership of choice has had the 4440 back down there 5 TIMES this winter and the hydraulics are still not correct on it! He hoped this dealership would be better, but it sure doesn't look like it...
