I assume you've checked the valve adjustments each time before turning the engine over. Are any of them not staying tight? Do the valves still move freely in the head? Are the rocker arms getting oil? What head work was done in the overhaul, anything to cause valves to tighten up, maybe knurled guides or replaced guides and left them too tight? I have had exhaust valves that were too tight in the guides hang up.
