My first and only mortgage was in 1979. $14,000 foreclosed house. Bank required a $4000 cash down-payment. Gave me a $10,000 mortgage at 14.5% interest. I had a close friend at the time that had a VA mortgage at 12%. I remember being quite envious. I worked two real jobs plus repaired tractors at night. Also had four kids and no welfare or food stamps. Paid if off in 6 years and swore I'd never borrow money again. So far - I kept that promise to myself. I redid everything in the house myself and later sold it for $140K (25 years later).
