We put ours in over 15 years ago when we built the house. Used a horizontal loop, 125 foot trench with 3 pipes in/out (750 feet total). Vertical loops weren't common back then, or we would have probably went that way. The trench is still visible in the yard. The system is a Bard with propane backup. Bullet proof, but Bard doesn't make them anymore. We've had very few problems, and would definately do it again. I have a friend in the business, so all I paid was his cost on the equipment, and no labor. It ended up costing the same as a conventional HVAC system if the contractors would have installed it. If you can justify the cost, you'll be happy with it.
