JD used a closed center hydraulic system in all of their tractors through the 60's 70's and 80's, I think they went to open center with the 5400 series. Almost all other tractors use an open center system. The closed center system was faster that the contemporary open systems of that time. I think that if you use an open center valve on a closed center system your system will be under load all the time and your tractor will act like it is working hard all the time. The valve is likely open center unless it is specified as closed center. Buickanddeere and JD Seller will know more about it and be able to explain it better than I can.
