I've heard alot of places like jiffylube use those to change engine oil because they couldn't trust their empoyees to put the drainplug back on. All the gunk settles to the bottom and doesn't get sucked up. Where as with the drain plug in the bottom the gunk gets drained out. I've heard it really gums up an engine doing it that way. I don't speak from personal experience but just from people i've talked to.
