Actually its only legal to use deadly force in a home invasion in 31 states. Other states say the "invasion" its self does not give you the right to use deadly force - the intruder has to have the means to cause "great" bodily harm or death for you to use dealy force.
In some states like Illinois you are required by law to retreat from the invader and not use force to make them leave. In Illinois a man was charged with murder after he retreated to his bedroom, told the invaders he had a gun and then shot the firt one that kicked in his bedroom door. The prosecutor said the man could have gone out his second story window to his porch roof to avoid the confrontation.
