That is correct. You may have given it sufficient current across the points in the field circuit that corrosion or resistance was removed. I would monitor voltage as the battery gets fully charged. If it continues to charge at 10 amps or more, or the volts exceed 7.2 when charged, the contacts could be welded together. if welded, it would start working again, but be uncontrolled. Jim
