They work. You might as well keep your present pressure tank. They will make the pump keep running for as long as water is being used which will reduce the number of starts and stops, and as is the case with many things, that increases the life of the pump. The other thing they do (as you mentioned) is keep the pressure constant which can make for nicer showers, more consistent sprinklers, etc.
