Years ago on the north shore of Lake Superior, I was out in the woods. I had to cross a river which was iced over. It was a rather sluggish, slow moving river. Perhaps 50 feet wide where I was crossing. I carefully checked the ice as I went across and all was fine. I was well passed the deep part and almost to the other side when I heard a sound. I guess I went on auto, because I immediately started to throw my arms out to the side. The ice gave way and down I went. My arms being stretched out to the side stopped me from going all the way down. Fortunately the ice around the hole was solid and I was able to scramble out. I was soaked all the way up to my chest. By the time I got back to my truck I was pretty cold.
