Actually that happened but not the correct story. Guy (SSG) did get a dear john from his wife. Took the tank (full combat load of main gun ammo on board), ran over some stuff on his way to the East German border so he could "kick the Soviets butt" and then could go home to save his marriage. He was very drunk at the time. He sobered up enough to know he was screwing up big time and just stopped in the middle of a bridge that was blocked by a few cop cars. It was right after that the Army required that the main gun firing pins had to be stored in the arms room and could not be left on the tanks.
