Engines are air pumps. Air in, air out. restrict either and you reduce performance. Why do you think large CU in engines are work horses.....CUBES....air in air out.
Ford diesels especially hate output restrictions. Have had a couple that would not run if I put a new muffler on them with baffles in it till I knocked the baffles out.
Had a JD 4230, 100 drawbar hp, 400 cu inch diesel with this little 1 1/2 inch exhaust on the OEM muffler. Thing ran like crap. Ripped it off and put a straight chrome pipe on it (roughly 3 1/2"....exhaust made for the turbo that made one a 4430) and it purred like a kitten. Took it to local parades a couple of times and got a standing ovation as I passed the crowd...course it was built in the USA in '74 and I had a sign in the cab window attesting to that fact....so that could have been part of the ya- hoo, course you could hear every cylinder hit on that big inline 6.
