I know of people that have tapped in January and also tapped in the Fall. Often with special 1/4" taps instead of 7/16". I wouldn't do it. Too much chance of a short run and the tap hoses closing up. Then you've got a lot of equipment to clean and an entire woods to re-drill when another run comes.
The "good old days" of using formaldehyde pills to keep the holes open is gone - at least in the USA.
In regard to warm weather and it's short-term affect on this year's season? Nobody knows; it's a crap-shoot. Long term, if this persisted - would result in disaster for people tapping hard and black maple trees.
