I try to keep a decent muffler on my machinery. I've got a few farmer friends who have a distinct hearing loss, especially in the left ear, primarily because that ear is usually turned toward the exhaust while working in the field. But having a straight piece of pipe does sound 'mean'. It'll only cost about fifty bucks, where the muffler is about sixty. Then you can spring for a set of ear protectors for about another $50...
