We always soaked our wood posts in used crankcase oil in a barrel when I was a kid nearly 50 years ago. Lots of those posts that we treated that way are still holding up fence just fine. Down in the ground, they still look pretty good. The tops have weathered from weather and sun exposure. Untreated posts would have rotted away almost completely.
I would question how much good painting or spraying oil on fence posts in the ground would do, as I think it would mostly just drip off. If I was going to try that, I think I would roll it on, several coats over about a week.
In my opinion, a little used oil doesn"t hurt a darn thing and it might help preserve fence posts. A whole lot of it in one spot might be a problem, but a little bit, if left alone just oxidizes in a few years and then the grass grows better in that spot.
