Those numbers were hand stamped, and often shallow and hard to read (layers of paint, grease, dirt, etc.) To make matters worse, the pre-'65 diesels were known to leak battery acid and destroy the numbers. Good news is, all 4-cylinders engines from '53 through '64 will bolt in, in place of any of the others. The 601 (600's didn't have a diesel option) and 4-cyl. 2000 diesels used a 144 c.i. It is difficult to find parts for, but not impossible. Try asking on the Ford forum on this site; a couple guys have tractors with engine, and know where to get parts.
