Gear Pumps have a drain passage that is designed to remove fluid that has leaked into the seal pocket to drain back to the case drain so that pressure cannot build on the seal causing it to leak.
Pumps that are designed to be bi-directional have drain passages that drain to both the inlet and outlet connections and the passages have check valves installed so that the pressure drains to the low pressure connection and the high pressure from the outlet is blocked from entering the seal pocket.
