Those big old crank cases sweat on the inside and the water ends up in the bottom then freezes. When you start it the coupler breakes. I would take the crank case cover off and unbolt the rods from the crank and see just how bad it really is. I have fixed a few of these I picked at acution, took them home, cleand up the crank a little, reset the shims and bolt them back together and used them for years. These engines turn so darn slow they can be way out of spec and still give good service. If you don't want to mess with the old style bearing you can go pick up a set of rods out of a 60 pretty cheap and just use the 60 insert bearing. Be sure to measure the crank to see if it has ever been turned before ordering bearings and also check the wrist pin sizes. Many of these old gals have over sized wrist pins in them.
