Anybody can get hurt or killed working around live wires - pro or homeowner. I was a lineman back in the 70s for PSE&G and knew, or knew of . . a few fellow workers that got burnt bad - and/or killed. We're all human and subject to human error.
One note. Many such deaths (with lineman) are from low voltage, not high voltage. The high voltage can burn you up something awful (or kill you eventually), but the low voltage power on 60 cycles is what puts the human heart out of rhythm and is a known killer. People seem to fear it less which might be part of the problem. Maybe they've got some new device know that's better at getting heart rhythm back in sync. - but when I was a lineman, 60 cycle current was a big issue. Most of the work-related deaths at our power company were from 60 cycles and heart fibrillation.
