Maybe it's due to age and wear, but we have accidentally put diesel in our MF 35 gas and our 67 Ford 2 ton truck without any pinging, just hard to start and weak till they got hot. I have run a compression check on the truck though and it's still well within spec. It had 5 gal of diesel in it and nothing else, ran rough so we put in 10 gal of gas and it straightened out fine. We didn't even put any gas in the tractor, just burned out the diesel. When it had fresh gas it went back on hammer mill duty with as much power as it ever had.
