I found the answer under "ask.com" they use a controller and it has to have some way to recognize the position of the rotating permanent magnets. Looks like they have some advantages, like increased tor ck at low speed. Friend has solar pump in pasture and loves it. small stream when little sun, big stream with bright sun. Was about $5,000 couple of years ago. Windmills cost about that now too. I think the little fan in my computer is brush less and it costs about 3 dollars ????????????? KennyP
