Dates don't search in the archives, but if you know who posted the message, find a recent post by that person. Then in "modern view", click on the person's profile, then click on "find all posts" from that person. At the bottom of the page there will be an option to go to the "next" page, or to, say, page 200 or so. By reading the dates you can usually go back an forth a few times and zero in on your quest.
