A lot depends on soil fertility, ph, and drainage. If all of the above are suitable for alfalfa, one could burn down the grass with roundup at first green up in the spring and immediately follow with a no-till drill with alfalfa.
Here in WI, alfalfa seeded in this manner in April will have a great first cut around July 1.
However, low ph, poor drainage, and inadequate P and especially K will not favor alfalfa. Has your feild seen fertilizer in the time it was hay? Remember, nothing removes nutrients like a forage crop, and we need to be responsible to put them back, either as fertilizer or manure.
Reseeding in this manner could also be done after a first cutting; however, adequate rainfall after seeding is a must, and is typically more lacking in summer than in spring.
