My co-op installed the smart meters about 4 years ago. Comparing past past bills, they seem accurate. I sure do appreciate not having to bust through snow drifts to get to my pole to read it anymore. When they first installed them, I still had to read it manually for a few months until they were satisfied that the numbers they were getting on their end were accurate.
We had no choice either, but I don't know why you wouldn't want one.
