I actually did have it happen to me, but the fellow was not a close friend, just a fellow I had met at a meeting. He had to leave early because he needed to catch a flight that would get him home before the Sabbath (he didn't want to have to walk home from the airport). He called me a couple days later to discuss the meeting and at the end of the conversation, he wished me Happy Holidays. I took it as a pleasant secular statement, and it's possible he had no idea if I was Christian, Jew or atheist and maybe he didn't want to offend me.
