We used to have a 2 row(center feed alley) 24 cow tiestall barn back in Holland,was the common way to keep the dairy cows over the winter before the freestalls came around.
We used 2 upright pipes,1 each side of the cow with a 2' chain with rings over the pipe for up and down movement and a leather belt trough the other end of the chains and around the neck.
The front half of the stand was dirt,the rear half concrete,we used straw for bedding.There was a back alley as well on both sides
The cows were quite comfortable in it, the biggest draw back i found was teat damage from cows stepping side ways on a laying down neighbors teat.
Freestalls have their own problems,i worked in them as well,don't know wich is better?
