About 45 years ago that happened to my co-worker's 1962 Ford car with the 352cid engine. The engine lite came and and the lifters started to rattle. We pushed the car into the garage and installed a pressure gauge. No pressure and my co-worker told me to put him on leave the next day. He called the next morning at work and told me to pick up a new pump and I did that and went over to help him. The sludge caused the pump to bypass the oil. He cleaned the old pump and probably would've been ok, but he never used it. You may have a bad sending unit. Hal
