I thought I read somewhere that "freon" is actually more dense than regular air so in reality settles to the ground and does not do anything at all to the atmosphere.
This same article said that the patent for "freon" or R-12 was about to expire so DuPont - the maker of R-12 and holder of the about to expire patent had their lobyists in DC start campaigning the politicians to start crying about it harming the atmosphere and make it illegal. Seems DuPont had its replacement already patented and ready to go.
I may have dreamed the whole thing but seems like I remember reading that or maybe even hearing it on the radio one day
